Winter Family Weekend

December 23 - December 27, 2016 - Louisville, KY

What is it and when is it?

The Winter Family Weekend runs from Friday evening, Dec. 23, through Tuesday night, Dec. 27, 2016—so it’s more than just a weekend! We start things off with a Bible study on Friday night, followed by Sabbath morning seminars, afternoon services and some Saturday night dancing. From Sunday through Tuesday evening, all attendees can participate in additional educational seminars, basketball, volleyball, organized games for the kids, including bowling, karaoke, family novelty Olympics, a clothing swap for families and, of course, the Family Fun Fair that includes large inflatables, putt-putt golf, mechanical bull and more. Also planned is a free pizza night, activities for singles and a final evening of dancing at the family dance. The winner of best costume at the adult dance wins a complimentary night’s stay at the Galt House, and the winner of best costume at the teen dance wins money. For most, the highlight seems to be the fellowship time with our spiritual family. There truly is something for everyone.

Where is it?

The Galt House Hotel and Conference Center
140 N. Fourth St.
Louisville, KY 40202

Do I need to register? And if so, how do I do that?

Yes! Registration is open! Start by logging into your account in our registration portal, portal.cogwa.org/acct. (This is the same account you used to sign up for the Young Adult Leadership Weekend, to apply for camps and to register for the Feast this year.) If you have not already set up an account, you will need to create an account by clicking on the Create an Account link at that same URL. Once you are able to log in to your account, click on the Register button under Events > Winter Family Weekend (lower left corner of the page). This will allow you to register each household member individually for the WFW. Once all household members are set up, be sure you complete the registration process by clicking through to the Review and Confirmation pages of the registration process. Please note, it is very, very helpful if BEFORE registering you gather as much information about who will be participating in which event(s) and serving in which area(s). However, you will also be able to make edits whenever needed by logging back into your account and editing the registration for any of your household member. The WFW web page URL is members.cogwa.org/wfw if you need additional information.

How much does it cost?

Paying in advance saves you money. All attendees (aged 13 and up) are charged a WFW event fee of $10 (if paid in advance) or $15 (if paid on arrival). There is no charge for anyone under the age of 13. Additional charges are as follows:

  • Men’s basketball $15 in advance/$20 at the event
    (This fee also covers volleyball.)
  • Sports (any and all sports for those 13 and up) $10 in advance/$15 at the event
(This fee is for those who are not also playing men’s basketball.)

The maximum charge per family (all living under one roof) is $100.

What are the housing costs? When can I make reservations?

Our WFW rate is $68 per night per room, and reservations can be made beginning on Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016. To obtain the Church’s rate, please make online reservations at https://aws.passkey.com/go/wfw1229 (also available on the WFW website). Do not make reservations by phone (502-589-5200 or 1-800-The-Galt) unless you have trouble making them online. If you call, be sure to identify yourself as a member of the Church of God, a Worldwide Association, coming for the Winter Family Weekend.

Where can I find out more about the facilities we are using?

Here are the website addresses of the venues we will be using: galthouse.com, midamericasportscenter.com, mainevent.com.

What is this year’s theme?

This year the theme will be “Faith and Hope in a Troubled World.” God’s promises about our destiny and mankind’s future give the life of Christians great meaning during troubling times. Jesus Christ stated in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” Although we live in a world that is anything but peaceful, with the help of God’s Holy Spirit we can experience a great deal of inner peace. This peace and understanding is not grasped by most people today, but, as Jesus Christ makes clear, He provides as no other.

What are the dance themes?

  • Family dance—no theme this year. Come in nice casual (nice jeans, nothing immodest).
  • Teen dance (grades 7-12 only)—“Around the World.” Come dressed in the native clothing of a particular country. Winner of “best costume” receives $25. Dress is nice casual (no shorts) if you do not wear a costume.
  • Adult dance (high school grads and up)—“Disco Nights.” Come dressed in your most authentic ’70s style (nothing immodest). Winning costume receives a complimentary night’s stay at the Galt House.

Who do I contact for “singles in the middle” (35 and up) activity information?

Please contact Beverly McKnight at [email protected] or 336-207-5608 to discuss any activities planned or ideas you have—or to volunteer to serve.

Who do I contact about participating in special music?

We will have four musical numbers for Sabbath services, including a teen/young adult choir selection. If you would like to participate in the choir or if you would like to perform, please contact the music coordinator, Dave Myers, at [email protected]

Be sure to check the Winter Family Weekend Website on a regular basis for updated information!
