The Real No-Spin Zone Is on Your Bookshelf

Written by James D. Cannon

We use the word spin to describe untrustworthy words used to influence our opinion. The opposite of spin is truth. Where can we find truth?

In the last 10 to 15 years “spin” has become a political buzzword. Spin is a form of propaganda, achieved through providing a biased interpretation of an event to persuade public opinion in favor or against something or someone. Spin often implies the use of disingenuous, deceptive and manipulative tactics.

Spin is not a new phenomenon. Spin began in the Garden of Eden when Satan, posing as a serpent, cleverly deceived Eve by subtly convincing her to doubt God.

Truth, on the other hand, is firm, sure and reliable. It can be verified and exists without pretense or deception. It can be summarized as bringing everything to light. While spin uses selective data to exalt one person or viewpoint over another, truth simply places all facts out in the open. One person or one viewpoint is not the focus; truth is the focus.

There is only one absolutely reliable source for the unadulterated truth—God’s inspired Word. It is the real no-spin zone.

No spin in God’s Word

Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible comments on truth as follows: “The life, the purity, and the teaching of Jesus Christ was the most complete and perfect representation of the things of the eternal world that has been or can be presented to man. The ceremonies of the Jews were shadows; the life of Jesus was the truth. The opinions of men are fancy, but the doctrines of Jesus were nothing more than a representation of facts as they exist in the government of God. It is implied in this, also, that Jesus was the fountain of all truth; that by his inspiration the prophets spoke, and that by him all truth is communicated to men.”

Jesus Christ’s own words in His final recorded prayer attest to this: “Your word is truth” (John 17:17).

Again Albert Barnes’ Notes on the Bible comments on this verse in this way: “All that thou hast spoken—that is, all that is contained in the Bible. All the commands and promises of God; His representations of His own character and that of man; His account of the mission and death of His Son; of the grave, the resurrection, judgment, and eternity, all tend to represent things as they are, and are thus fitted to sanctify the soul. We have here also the testimony of the Saviour that the revelation which God has given is true. All that God has spoken is true, and the Christian should rejoice and the sinner should tremble.”

The truth of the matter is:

  • When God’s Word states that the re-creation was completed in six days, from sunset to sunset—this is the truth.
  • When God’s Word states that the entire globe was covered with the water from the great Flood—this is the truth.
  • When God’s Word states that “Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea into dry land, and the waters were divided” (Exodus 14:21)—this is the truth.
  • When God’s Word states that God’s people must live “by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Matthew 4:4)—this is the truth.

Yes, there is a real no-spin zone, and most of us have it in our homes today. It is therefore important for all to be very familiar with it and to use it daily to keep the spin out of our lives.
