Why Fast?
Written by David Register
Fasting—going without food and drink (Esther 4:16)—is often referred to in the Bible. Typically, it is for a 24-hour period, such as on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 23:32). In the New Testament, Christ told His disciples that they should fast after His death and resurrection (Mark 2:18-20). But what's the reason for fasting? Why put ourselves through the agony of doing without food and drink?
One of the most instructive examples of a fast in the Bible occurred during the time of King Jehoshaphat of Judah (2 Chronicles 19-20). While the King and his Jewish subjects were making much needed religious reforms, they were threatened by the nations around them. As their enemies began to advance against Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, King Jehoshaphat was very concerned and "set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah" (2 Chronicles 20:3). It is clear from this example that when we want or need God's help or intervention, fasting is part of the process we should follow.
It is interesting that in this account we find keys that explain the purpose of fasting. They are simple. (1) Fasting helps us realize that we have no power of ourselves. All that we are as Christians comes from God through His Holy Spirit. (2) By fasting, we humbly admit that we don't know what to do. Therefore we seek God's direction! And (3) Fasting causes us to look to God for His help as opposed to looking within or to other people for knowledge, wisdom or strength (2 Chronicles 20:12). These three keys found in this scripture must be used to fast effectively! Fasting reminds us that we are physical and temporal. Without food and drink, we would die. Similarly, we realize that without God and His help, we would die spiritually.
After their fast, God delivered the Jews during Jehoshaphat's day. But He did it in a surprising manner. Their enemies turned upon each other and began killing themselves. The Jews then had little to do except collect the spoil (2 Chronicles 20:20-25). Often, when we fast and pray for God's intervention on our behalf, He also answers in ways that we don't expect.
As we fast for this upcoming conference, let's humbly seek God's will. Let's acknowledge that we have no power of ourselves and that we need His divine guidance.
Anyone with a serious health condition should consult with a qualified medical practitioner before fasting for a prolonged period.
