Why Is Australia Experiencing Floods?

Written by Larry Murray

These floods in Australia are getting out of hand!

Did you hear Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s impassioned cry on Telegraph.co.uk (Feb. 8, 2011)? Absolutely heartrending! According to News.bbc.co.uk, “Thunderstorms…have dumped huge amounts of rain on Australia’s east coast. Many rivers have been unable to cope and their banks have burst. Roads have been turned into lakes and bridges have been washed away.”

And now, just when the government was bringing the Queensland floods under control, a cyclone has hit the Great Barrier Reef area. “A narrow band of the reef was battered by a massive cyclone that passed overhead earlier this month and struck the coast with winds of up to 170 miles (280 kilometers) per hour,” reports News.yahoo.com (Feb. 11, 2011).

Meanwhile on the west coast of Australia, they have the other extreme: drought and bush fires (pity they can’t ship a little of the rain across the continent!).

In other parts of the world, we see different natural disasters. The world has already conveniently forgotten the eruption of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland, whose pollution of the atmosphere paralyzed European air transport; but it’s still there, together with its partner Katla, and what’s happened so far could be just the opening act!

Now news has just broken of an earthquake in Chile measuring 6.8 centered in the same area as last year’s magnitude-8.8 quake. A year ago, a magnitude-7.0 earthquake rocked the small island nation of Haiti and its 9 million inhabitants. This was the most severe quake to strike the island in over 200 years (Yahoo.com, Jan. 13, 2009).

And before you tell me “there have always been natural disasters, so what’s so different now?”—let me state that it seems to me that there are far more disasters happening now than ever before, and their intensity has increased!

Where are all these disasters coming from? Is somebody trying to tell us something? What? Why? For the answers, look in your Bible!

Matthew 24:6-8 reveals that “wars and rumors of wars…famines, pestilences, and earthquakes” will vastly escalate in the last days. But “all these are [only] the beginning of sorrows.”

Is this an indication of things still to come in our lifetimes? Most certainly. And the reason? God is removing His blessings from arrogant, immoral, lawless, selfish and thankless people! (See Deuteronomy 28:15-63 and Jeremiah 17:1-4.)

I believe God will reverse the cycle of flooding and drought we are entering, if we as a people cry out to Him, turn from our evil ways and begin to seek Him and obey His commandments (Deuteronomy 28:1-14).

Looking at entries on http://www.boston.com Big Picture Facebook (Jan. 20, 2011), I found many disillusioned comments. For example, “If gods such a great caring and loving bloke why does he allow this to happen and let little children perish i think all you bible bashers are full of c**p”. Yet another says, “I know GOD will never leave all of you. Just keep your faith STRONGER than the WIND.” Who is right?

Back in April 2007, drought in Australia was so severe that Prime Minister John Howard told Australians they needed to pray for rain. When national leaders like Prime Minister Howard direct the nation to God in prayer, it is a step in the right direction. But until people genuinely turn to God and obey His law, all the praying in the world will not fix problems with the weather.

The precarious state of the world today is clearly predicted in the Bible. Incredibly, this is a book almost totally ignored by today’s world leaders. They simply refuse to heed its warning to repent, return to God and live the way He intended us to. Instead, they still maintain that they have the answers to the world’s maladies.

The wonderful truth out of all this is that a better world will eventually emerge, one in which everyone will live in harmony, with sufficient food for all, and disease and natural disasters a thing of the past. At that time the entire world will learn the way of peace! All nations will live by God’s righteous laws (Isaiah 11:9)

What can you do until it arrives? Examine yourself. Are you living according to God’s laws? If not, come to God with heartfelt repentance. Make the change. There is not much time! Act now!
