The visual concept of a virgin and a child has often been used by traditional Christianity to depict the virgin Mary and her son. What if we were to approach that image from a different perspective? Could the virgin represent purity as well as moral and spiritual incorruption coupled with the infant representing new life, innocence and boundless potential for the future? Dr. Jordan Peterson, in his book entitled We Who Wrestle With God, makes this point and then poses another question: what if a society worships the virgin and forgoes, disdains, murders and ignores the child and then defines femininity as sexual power and attraction? Is this reflective of our western culture in the 21st century? What would a culture look like that valued virginity, purity, stable marriages, children, families and stable communities that offer maximum opportunities for all people to thrive and prosper? The linkage between men and women, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers and their offspring is undeniable. Did our Heavenly Father have this in mind when he established the sacred marriage covenant?
