2 Corinthians 11

Paul had a deep, fatherly relationship with the church in Corinth, guiding them to build godly relationships with one another and with Christ. Despite facing opposition, he passionately defended his role, describing his commitment using the metaphor of betrothal—a concept far more binding than modern engagement. In biblical and cultural terms, betrothal was a legal and spiritual commitment akin to marriage, only lacking cohabitation. Paul emphasized that, through baptism and receiving the Holy Spirit, believers are betrothed to Christ in an exclusive, covenant relationship. Just as a faithful bride prepares for her future husband, Christians must remain spiritually faithful, understanding that their full union with Christ—the “marriage”—will occur at His return.
