Moses and Joshua were commanded to remove their sandals as a symbol of how one must approach God. This was not a natural response for them—they had to be told to do it. In the same way, approaching God with humility does not come naturally to us; it must be learned. The question for us, then, is whether we remove our metaphorical sandals when we come before God, or whether we approach Him still clothed in pride.
