Atonement a Day of Affliction and Reconciliation

On this day, God commands us to come before Him afflicted in soul. We fast today; we afflict our soul today that we might be more closely reconciled to God. We foreshow and experience the process that mankind will undergo in the future. We accomplish our affliction on this day by fasting. However, at the end of this day, if all we are is hungry, we have missed the deeper meaning and benefit that God would have us receive from our affliction. This is also a day of reconciliation!
