Binitarian to Trinitarian

We just read the words of Jesus in Matthew 11 speaking ONLY of Himself and the Father, with no mention of anyone else in the Godhead. How did things in the Christian realm go from Binitarian (meaning 2 members in the Godhead) to Trinitarian?
