The history recorded in the Book of Ruth regarding Ruth and Naomi is particularly relevant when discussing the topic of discouragement and depression. It must have been a wonderful future that Naomi and Elimelech were looking forward to; the prospects of grandsons and granddaughters; the future of growing old with the man that she loved; working hard as a family and never being in want; able to give to family and others—that likely was her dream, their plans. But the death of Naomi’s husband and her two sons changed all of that. Depression, discouragement, despondency, distress, and grief is real. So real for Naomi that she said don’t call me by my name Pleasant, call me Bitter because that’s what I am. But God sends Ruth!
