When Aaron and his sons were consecrated for the priesthood, they were instructed to put their hands on the heads of animals that were about to be sacrificed. Some of the blood of these sacrifices was also sprinkled on Aaron and his sons.
Putting one’s hand on the head of a live animal prior to its sacrifice was likely quite sobering for these men. With the sacrifice, what was once a thriving, breathing, living animal became an offering to God being burned on an altar. Being sprinkled with blood was most likely also a startling, sobering event that put the killing of an animal on the priest’s minds.
Putting a human to death also involved personal contact between those who witnessed the sin of blasphemy and the perpetrator. In this situation, the witnesses were required to lay their hands on the head of the person who was going to be stoned. These acts reminded those involved of the preciousness of life and how it can easily be snuffed out. As humans, many of us don’t like to think about this. Some people don’t even like to think about killing animals that we eat. But at this time of year, God’s Word instructs us to reflect on the fact that Jesus Christ gave His life for each of us. We focus on this when we observe the Passover and this subject is so important that in the Church of God, a Worldwide Association one of our Fundamental Beliefs covers the importance to Christ’s death. Today, in this sermon, we are going to review the significance of the sacrifice of Christ.
