The Spiritual Significant of Leaven

The Israelites were commanded to remove leaven from their dwellings and eat unleavened bread for seven days. Was this merely an arbitrary dietary restriction or was there more to it? What makes leaven the ideal metaphor for sin and why is it important for us to remove physical leaven from our homes, our cars our possessions and spiritual leaven from our hearts and minds? Is it either/or OR both?
