Do We Savor the Moment?
Written by Judy Swanson
Many people rush through life and don’t truly live it. Do we stop and take the time to appreciate all the good things God has surrounded us with?
As I look out my windows, I see my buttercups (or, as some people may call them, jonquils or daffodils). They are a beautiful sight to see. I wake up before the sun rises and love to watch the beautiful pink and red colors that seem to stream across the sky and color the clouds with their rays. It helps me pause and thank God for His loving-kindness and mercies and the fact that He provides these little things to give us pleasure.
God wants us to be happy: “The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly” (John 10:10).
Even though I strive to savor every moment of the day, I also have a tendency to “hurry up.” I have identified with the song “I’m in a Hurry (and Don’t Know Why)” by Alabama. The only thing I don’t identify with is the phrase, “I rush and rush until life’s no fun,” because I always try to enjoy life, even when I am rushing.
Focus on God’s blessings
Do we really enjoy each day and savor each moment no matter what trial we may be encountering at the moment? Do we always rejoice because we know God’s precious truths? We have been given such a wonderful truth of knowing our destiny is to be in God’s family.
Do we give thanks even when we are struggling through trials? We have all lost many friends and family members over the years but always have the hope that we will see them again—and for all eternity! We focus on the resurrection, when we will be changed to spirit and never suffer again (Revelation 21:4).
When we savor the smallest moments of a stunning sunrise, sunset, flowers blooming or beautiful birds singing, do we think of God and thank Him for His marvelous love for us and that He made these things for our enjoyment? Here are two scriptures to consider:
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be thankful” (Colossians 3:15).
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thessalonians 5:18).
