The Mother of Christ: Would God Choose You?

Written by Judy Swanson

Have you ever wondered about the mother of Jesus Christ and what it was about her that made her favorable in the sight of God the Father?

Imagine, if you can, that you are a young woman, engaged to a man quite a few years older than yourself. You are in your room and suddenly a bright being appears and begins to speak to you! He tells you he is Gabriel, an angel from God, and that God is with you. He tells you that you are highly favored and blessed among all women!

WOW! Your knees tremble, your heart pounds! What is the meaning of all this?

He calms your fears and then informs you that you are going to conceive and bear a son! Unbelievable! You have never slept with your fiancé or any man, as you would never break any of God’s commandments. Then Gabriel goes on to say that the Son born to you “will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob [Israel] forever” (Luke 1:32-33).

Your head is reeling, and you’re thinking, “How can this be happening? I am not even married yet!”

Although you are overwhelmed, you are ecstatic and joyful and believing!

Overwhelmed but believing

That sounds like Mary! Certainly she was troubled at all this, but the angel Gabriel calmed her fears and explained to her that the Holy Spirit would come upon her and the power of the Highest would overshadow her and would put the seed of the baby Jesus in her womb!

Mary didn’t doubt the angel. She believed him and accepted the prophecy concerning the bearing of God’s Son! She said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).

Later she glorified God with these words: “My soul magnifies the Lord, and my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior. For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; for behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed, for He who is mighty has done great things for me, and holy is His name” (Luke 1:46-49).

What did God see in Mary?

Wouldn’t you just love to know that God the Father knew you well enough to want you to be the mother of His Son! Isn’t that what we as women would love to hear?

What is it that God saw in Mary for Him to choose her to be the mother of His Son?

She had total trust and belief in God. She didn’t doubt the angel when he brought her the news of what was going to happen to her.

When she went to see her relative Elizabeth, who was pregnant with John, what did Elizabeth say to her? “Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her from the Lord.”

Have we asked ourselves, if we lived at that time, would God have looked on us with favor? What about now? When I examine myself, I know that I fall far short. Do we really believe and trust in God, no matter what happens to us? If we are close to God and are in a walking, talking relationship with Him, we will believe and trust in Him. No matter what happens, we won’t lose heart or be doubtful because we are told that He will never leave us nor forsake us (Hebrews 13:5).

Mary was thankful, believing and trusting! Can we be thankful, believing and trusting, no matter what happens? If we can, then God will look favorably on us and tell us that we are well-favored and blessed among women!

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).Judy Swanson
