Going on to Perfection

Are we capable of being perfect in this lifetime? God asks us to become perfect. But what is the meaning of the word, "perfect" as it is used in the Bible? And what is the relationship between becoming "perfect and inheriting eternal life? What did the Apostle Paul mean when he wrote that we should "go on to perfection"?
