Miracles of Life!
Written by Mike Bennett
Love, marriage and sex (in that order) are designed to give the miracle of a new life the best possible start. And family serves as a training ground for an even more miraculous part of God’s plan.
“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well” (Psalm 139:13-14, New International Version).
David’s powerful poetry extols the wonders of human reproduction. God’s awesome plan brings a husband and wife together as one flesh that two cells might unite to become a new life!
The tiny egg, smaller than the period at the end of this sentence, dwarfs the even tinier sperm, though together they contain all the genetic information necessary to produce a unique human being, more complex than any supercomputer ever designed.
Could the blueprint required to design a star system be more amazing than this? I’ll have to ask God someday.
A new creation
The more I study the science of the 23 pairs of chromosomes combining, with all their genes and DNA, the more I imagine a dance in the nucleus of the ovum. As the genetic gifts of father and mother meld, I also imagine our Creator smiling upon His new creation.
In God’s ideal plan, we are:
- Formed in love.
- Nurtured in love.
- Launched in love.
- Married in love, to form more new lives in love, renewing the cycle.
God holds men responsible
In human reality, the love God intended is often tarnished, invisible or absent during some of those formative stages.
God’s law—especially the Seventh Commandment against adultery—is designed to prevent that damage. In this world, men may seem to get away with premarital or extramarital sex, but God holds men responsible and accountable. We must hold God’s law and the sanctity of marriage in highest esteem. Those who harm women and children, whether by their actions or by their neglect, are not held guiltless.
The man is told to love his wife and make love only to her. Obedience brings great blessings to him, his family and society. And family is to serve as a training ground for the next stage in God’s plan.
A higher dimension
God, in His incredible love for each of us, is not through with His creative work. For each of us, He begins the process of reproduction again, but this time in an entirely different dimension. God offers the seed of the Holy Spirit to unite with our minds, leading to our spiritual rebirth as children of God!
Someday, that second miracle will be complete.
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is” (1 John 3:1-2, NIV).
